Correct installation of bearings is crucial to exploiting the full potential that the bearing has to offer. The repercussions of a poorly installed bearing can be far reaching regardless of whether you are installing a bearing into an airframe or a suspension system. Carter Manufacturing bring you the full range of Unasis Aerospace bearing installation tools which give you to the ability to correctly install your bearing first time, every time. With a wide range tools on offer, as well as the ability to work with a customer to design bespoke tools for one-off applications, Unasis are able to cater to all our customers’ bearing tooling needs. The UNASIS installation and removal tools have been proven to improve the installation of bearings leading to a cost and time saving benefit to all our customers.

The above images serve as an illustration of the different finishes provided by the traditional anvil staking tools (right hand image) and Unasis Tri-roller swaging tools (left hand image).

It is evident in the images that the roll stake tri-roller tool has provided an even, smooth and mirror-like surface to the swaging lip on the bearing. Virtually no gap is visible between the swaged lip and the housing and will thus provide superb mating and retention between the two components. This is in stark contrast to the solution provided by the anvil tool where the surface is not as smooth as the roller tool and the obvious gap between the swaged lip and the housing would suggest an inferior retention and mating between bearing and housing.

What is not obvious in the images but can result from using more basic tools are issues such as abrading, sheared edges, gauges and micro cracks. These issues primarily arise because the forces used for anvil staking tools are much great and the magnitude of material stress is much great when compared with tri-roller swaging tools which stress the material much less by causing the material to deform in small increments rather than forcing a large change in one movement.

The collective result of these factors is that by using a roll stake tri-roller swaging tool the bearing is better seated in the housing, better able to perform its function and less likely to be damaged.

Carter offers a full range swaging, cutting and install/removal tools in addition to proof loading and breakaway torque testing tool for the correct installation, testing and removal of grooved or plain spherical bearings, sleeves and housings.

Swaging, cutting and install/removal tools are all available as drill-press or portable types for easy manufacturing processes or on aircraft maintenance.

Tri-roller Swaging Tools
Tri-roller or roll stake swaging tools have developed as an improvement to the traditional methods of Anvil or 2 wheel swaging. The Tri Roller or Roll Stake swaging tool offers the advantage of allowing the 3 rolling elements in the tool to better contact the V Groove surface of the bearing at the correct angle allowing the V Groove to fold over into the housing. Traditional 2 roller and Anvil tools caused damage to the V Groove lip. The Tri Roller uses a a combination of downward pressure and roller rotation. The rollers push material from the bearings outer ring v groove against the housing in order to locate it precisely and securely.

Roll Stake or Tri Roller tools are available from Carter Manufacturing in either Drill-Press (left image below) or Portable style (right image below). Both Drill Press style roll stake tri roller swaging tools and portable roll stake tri roller swaging tools are supplied both both primary and secondary swage locating anvils.

Cutter Tools
Accurate removal of a bearing from its housing is just as important as correct installation.

Cutter tools are specifically tailored to each bearing size in order to remove only the bearing itself with minimal or no damage to the housing. The UNASIS v groove bearing cutting tools are designed to work by cutting down into the swaged v groove of the bearing. This cut into the v groove of the bearing weakens the bearing lip that was swaged against the housing so that it easily collapses into the bore when the bearing is pressed out. The cutting tools are designed in such a way that the cutter only cuts the bearing and thus preserves the integrity of the housing.

Cutting tools are available as drill-press (image left below) or portable style (image right below).

Install/removal Tools
Install removal tools are design to insert and position bearing accurately prior to swaging and to carefully remove the bearing once the swaged lip has been removed. The install / removal tool keeps the bearing perpendicular to the housing ensuring that the housing is not damaged during the installation or removal. If bearings are just pressed into the housing the sharp edges of the bearing could score the housing bore. Care should always be taken when installing or removing bearings.

If the housing fits are designed to be loose you will not need an installation tool. However, generally removing bearings will always need this tool as the swaged lip is going to exert a good pressure against the housing even if it has been cut. Cutter tools are designed to allow the v groove lip to collapse but the bearing still needs a force applied to it so that the bearing breaks free. Using the install removal tool ensures that the bearing is withdrawn from the housing perpendicularly so as not to cause damage to the housing.

Test Tools
Testing such as proof load and break-away torque testing is normally required as part of bearing replacement certification by most original equipment manufacturers. The purpose of testing is to verify the correct installation has taken place of the replacement bearings. Testing tools supplied by Carter Manufacturing are tailored to these OE specifications. Custom made and special adaptations are also possible for non OEM specifications. Let our team know what your requirements are.

Proof loading tools are available as either ‘press’ style or ‘portable’ style tools.

The press style tools come in the form of pusher and receiver cups to support the bearing whilst being pressure loaded during tests. This style of tool is designed to work with a press (hydraulic/pneumatic) and customers own load cell. Press style proof loading tools are ideal for any specification where precise incremental loads need to be applied as they securely hold the bearing and evenly distribute the load to provide accurate testing results. Each size of bearing requires its own pusher and receiver cup in order to accurately match the swaging groove and housing on each bearing.
Bearing Proof Loading Tools

Portable proof loading tools take the form of an electronic handheld display, receiver cups,load cell and DTi gauge. These are highly mobile units that enable, if required, proof loading of newly installed bearings without the need to full remove the component from its assembly. Each unit is supplied with a load cell specific to the bearing being used and calibrated to the appropriate load value required per the specification. Electronic handheld displays can be calibrated to work with a number of load cells which reduce cost as a single display can be returned for re-calibration and additional load cells added to its library only requiring the purchase of an additional load cell. Electronic proof loading tools are all supplied with DTI gauges for displacement measurement.

Break Away Torque Testing Tools
Breakaway torque testing tools use a specialised torque wrench which, whilst holding the bearing in place, measures the force required to rotate the ball once the bearing is installed into its housing.

Due to the simple and lightweight design UNASIS break away torque testing tools can easily be used on components already installed in application. The Torque Testing Tools are simple to use and feature a memory dial indicator which records peak force value.

Break away torque testers and receiver cups are made to order items that are designed to help measure effectiveness against the requirements of the customers specification. Typical, standard tools work within a range of 0-170in/lbs but if the requirement falls outside of these limits a tool can be made to suit. Similarly, the hardware which retains the bearing can be adapted and customised to suit complex housings. Multiple retainers and receiver cups can be used with a single Torque Tool which keep the overall cost of a complete set low.
