Industrial Thin Section Bearings

Date Published: Feb 07, 2021

Silverthin is a specialised bearing company that produces premium-quality thin section bearings at its facility in Washington State, USA. The company is recognised worldwide as a market leader and offers an extensive portfolio of both standard and custom thin-section bearing solutions for use in the widest range of industrial machinery. Silverthin thin section bearings from Carter are specifically designed for industrial machinery applications where space is limited and weight reduction is required. As an example, they are widely specified for use in industrial robots, where light weight, durability and precision performance must be packaged into the smallest possible space.

Silverthin thin section bearings for industrial machinery increase design flexibility. In environments with axial loads present in one direction, the A-Type, angular contact ball bearing is recommended, and this bearing also works well in radial or combined radial-thrust applications. However, we recommend that Silverthin A-Type bearings should never be used alone to support moment loads or reversing axial loading. For these applications Type C Radial Contact bearings are recommended: they are designed with deep ball grooves specifically to withstand high loads in a small section, lightweight bearing. Although this bearing is used primarily in applications with radial loads, it can also withstand moderate axial loads, reversing axial loads, and moment loads too. However, for applications where space is tight, weight must be lost and significant moment loads will prevail, we recommend that designers consider Silverthin Type ‘X’ 4-Point Contact precision products.

The X-Type, or 4-point contact, ball bearing is ideal for moment loading applications and is designed with ‘Gothic arch’ raceways to create four contact points between the balls and the raceways. This design is excellent for moment loading and also for reversing axial loading. We recommend that the X-Type bearing be used for light loading conditions, but not in place of the C- or A-Type bearing if designing for pure radial loads.

Carter offers a range of Silverthin  bearings to choose from when space and weight saving with precision performance is required, in sizes from 1.000” (25.4mm) to 40.000” (1016.000mm)
