Napoleon is the manufacturer of choice for the most critical bearing application in the industry – manned space flight missions.

Napoleon Engineering Services produce engineered bearing solutions for the most critical environment: manned space flight. With a proven track record and approvals from the largest organisations in space research and exploration, their heritage means the bearings they design and manufacture are state-of-the-art engineering solutions.

Highly experienced design engineers and a comprehensive manufacturing facility in Olean, NY, USA, encompassing CNC turning, milling and grinding, give Napoleon the capability to produce bearings up to 450mm in ball, roller and needle configurations.

In addition to the design and manufacture of bearings, Napoleon also offers an independent bearing inspection and analysis service. Considered to be the benchmark for industry knowledge and expertise, this service is used by large bearing manufactures and OEMs across the world.

Heritage in bearing manufacturing for the aerospace industry

Industry-leading bearing knowledge

State-of-the-art, in-house manufacture

Carter are European Master Distributors for Napoleon Engineering Services, bringing the combination of bearing knowledge, state-of-the-art technology, and custom bearing manufacturing capabilities that Napoleon’s European customers have come to expect.

The level of service and local support that this partnership offers opens up custom bearing possibilities for the most advanced applications.

Napoleon specialises in custom and small production batch bearing manufacturing for the most extreme environments. Applications include bearings running in liquid oxygen and liquid kerosene rocket propulsion engines, and locking mechanisms on spaceports, as well as commercial aerospace systems, aero-derivative industrial gas turbines, antenna, and radar systems.

Aerospace bearing manufacture requires material traceability, the use of speciality high-quality materials and coatings, and precision manufacturing processes. These processes are then reviewed and evaluated under strict design and project evaluation procedures performed by the aerospace in-house engineering team. Full project management support from inquiry to completion ensures that you receive delivery of a cost-effective, superior-quality aerospace bearing solution on time and on budget.

Napoleon’s ISO9001:2015, AS9100D and NADCAP certifications, combined with an extremely high bar set by senior company management for good working practices, ensure your requirements are met and surpassed.

Qualified Napoleon in-house engineers carry out application evaluation, design and specification, life calculation and FEA analysis using industry-leading software and calculation tools to validate designs and prove engineering concepts. This focus on precision and attention to detail ensures bearings meet and exceed your design envelope requirement.

Bearing inspection, including failure analysis, condition analysis, metallurgical testing, first-article inspection and source qualification analysis, are all covered by Napoleon’s highly skilled engineering team.

FAA-PMA reverse engineering is a comprehensive inspection procedure offered by Napoleon to support certification of reverse-engineered parts.

Stringent reverse engineering evaluation validates replacement bearings for the rigorous quality, design, and application requirements of those originally specified. Detailed evaluation is carried out on original bearings using specially designed inspection equipment and procedures. This results in detailed drawings that enable the application to move forwards to the approval process and then manufacture.

PMA (Part Manufacture Approval) is a highly efficient way to reduce cost and lead time when carrying out aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul. This process can give you the commercial advantage by securing an inventory of specific aerospace bearings related to your requirements. Napoleon are experts in this field, working with customers to find solutions for aerospace bearing requirements on a daily basis.

Bearing life testing is a leading service provided by Napoleon to confirm the design, manufacture, and materials used in a bearing conform to the exact requirements of the application. Napoleon design and build test rigs in-house and calculate dynamic accelerated test programs to meet specific customer applications.

Dynamic testing can prove an existing bearing is capable of increased loads and speeds when an application requirement is increased. It can also be used to prove a new product in application, releasing potentially large cost savings for the customer.

Napoleon also manufactures and installs bearing test rigs in customer facilities, so that an ongoing program of testing and evaluation can be carried out on bearings from ongoing production batches. This ensures continuity of production quality and a significantly reduced risk of bearing failure in application. By using this method of ongoing product control, Napoleon has helped many large OEW customers save millions of dollars during procurement and manufacturing processes.

Bearing testing covers the following: life adjustment factors, validation of load rating, fast track qualification, weakest link failure mode, model correlation, material validation and manufacturing procedures. Call Carter today to learn how you could benefit from this service.
